Camberleys Martha Washington Inn (150 W. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, 276-628-3161) (website: www.marthawashingtoninn.com)

There are many ghost stories associated with this historic hotel, which served as a hospital during the Civil War. A young woman named Beth, who cared for the wounded soldiers, fell in love with one of her charges, John Stoves. He died, and Beth passed away just a few weeks later. Employees have reported seeing her ghost as she returns to Room 403, the room where Stoves died. Others tell of glimpsing a phantom horse looking for his master, a Union soldier shot in front of the building.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum (134 N. Royal Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, 703-838-4242) (website: oha.ci.alexandria.va.us/gadsby)

Built in 1770, this handsome, three-story brick structure began operating as a tavern in 1796. George Washington and other patriots met here during the American Revolution. A young woman died here in 1816. Modern-day visitors have reported seeing her ghost standing at a bedroom window, holding a candle. The woman was buried in nearby St. Paul’s cemetery, where her tombstone reads, “In memory of the female stranger, died Oct. 14, 1816, age 23 years 8 months.”

The George Wythe House (Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA 23185, 1-800-HISTORY or 757-229-1000) (website: www.colonialwilliamsburg.org)

Lady Ann Skipwith, who lost her temper during a ball at the Governor’s Palace and left in such a hurry that one of her slippers broke, reportedly haunts the house. As the story goes, she hobbled up the wooden staircase at the Wythe House, sounding like someone with a peg leg. One report stated that Lady Ann took her own life in a fit of rage. For more than 200 years, employees have heard the clicking sound of one shoe against the stairway; the sound almost always occurs at midnight. Other people have seen apparitions of Lady Ann, clothed in a beautiful ball gown and examining herself in a mirror.
